I thought all I needed was a business license and tax id number but I’m finding out more. Basically I would like to purchase clothing from a wholesale source (what do I need to do that?) and then resell the items on my ebay store. Can I get help from people who already do this please?

Well what I do is buy stuff from ebay then create my own website using webnode dot com and people order their items and I ship it to them,I guess you can do that but I don’t think you need a license if your using ebay,people do it all the time,I recommend you use a COD.

Question by Carol Q: Do I need a business license for an online retail store?
I am in the process of setting up an online retail store in the state of California. Do I need a business license? I have a sellers permit and an ein. When completing supplier applications I am sometimes asked for a copy of my business license. Since it is not a physical store, I was wondering. They offer a lot of information for people starting businesses, but I guess they forget to be simple with their information. Thanks, I would appreciate a knowledgeable experienced person to answer please.

I’m not the expert here but generally a business licence is required when there is an opportunity for a local, state, or federal agency to collect sales tax. So if you sell products from your website in the state you live in, you need a licence to they can collect sales tax from you. I assume the same would apply for local taxes. Step 1:
Take classes offered at a local university or through the Small Business Association to learn more about running and operating a small business. The more you know and learn before starting your business the better prepared you will be to face the challenges.

Step 4:
Choose a location and name for your business. You may have to check zoning laws on what kind of businesses can be located in the area you have chosen.

Step 5:
Obtain the appropriate licenses and permits for your business and building. You will also need insurance and tax information. These things can all be found by checking with your state’s small business association.
