Question by kearstinQ: What would be the best way to find artists, to supply inventory for an online /store front art business?
Im looking into starting an online art business. The main goal would be to find hobbiest artist who are looking to make extra cash at first and give the business a % of the profits(or other terms may be made) & possibly join the team as permanent art supplier. What would be the best way for me to find these artists/ suppliers??

Hey Kearstin,

Check the online sites for artists posting their wares. You might convince them to send you items that they have listed on some sites. If they sell first, you ship it for them at cost or some other arrangement that is to your liking, and agreeable to them.

Is it more profitable to open a business as an online business, store, or both?

Question by Raven Rage: Is it more profitable to open a business as an online business, store, or both?
What I mean is… What will bring more profit and sales between putting a business up online and selling a product or service, as opposed to openning up a full-scale store. Or should I do both?

Keep in mind about bills, and other expenses that need to be paid that will be taken out of the business’ profits.

It depends, to some degree, where you live. An online business basically saves you expensive office space; in my town, this is about $ 1300 a month for 1k sq. feet. That is fairly low. Shipping and handling might chip at you a bit.

A physical store would be much better in attracting customers. You can do more promotions and set up an atmosphere. Gauging how much you will actually sell is a matter left to you. We do not know the variables involved as well as you.

E-business is cheaper, but if you are supplying a community or want to have “fun”, a store might be best. It really depends on you. And, after all, there is no reason you can have both…

Do some research on how much you expect to sell at your local market. Find out potential locations and see if the profits will break even over the rent.

Q&A: Does anyone know of a good Japanese import store that does business online?

Question by Reverend Leigh: Does anyone know of a good Japanese import store that does business online?
When I lived in Savannah, there was a local shop (Hello Cutie) that was fairly good about importing Japanese music and movies. Since I’ve moved, I’ve used CDJapan a few times, but the shipping charges from Hokkaido are killing me.

Is there a good importer, based in the US or Canada that has an online store?

Q&A: What’s best to start up? An online business or a public store business?

Question by bblythe54: What’s best to start up? An online business or a public store business?
What would be the most successful as far as the business not failing and staying open for the long term….A online business or a Public Store business working from a building?

It all depends on what you want to sell.
The on-line business is a good choice if you have the space in your house to store it. I once thought about doing a on-line business with dropshipping. I decided it was not a good idea because I could not control it. Such as, if the customer got the wrong product then they would think it was my fault. I have enough faults without adding other peoples to it. LOL
But a public store is good if you have the time to stay there all day at least to begin with until you can hire someone else. The key to a store is location. It has to be in a good location.
I am working on opening up at a flea market for now. It’s cheaper than a store.

What do I need to do to start an online store…(business license, tax id, resell certificate, wholesale)?

Question by juiced_peach: What do I need to do to start an online store…(business license, tax id, resell certificate, wholesale)?
I thought all I needed was a business license and tax id number but I’m finding out more. Basically I would like to purchase clothing from a wholesale source (what do I need to do that?) and then resell the items on my ebay store. Can I get help from people who already do this please?

Well what I do is buy stuff from ebay then create my own website using webnode dot com and people order their items and I ship it to them,I guess you can do that but I don’t think you need a license if your using ebay, people do it all the time,I recommend you use a COD.

Q&A: What income can I expect when starting an online business/store?

Question by justwannaknowstuff: What income can I expect when starting an online business/store?
I am interested in starting an online business (specializing in dogs/breeders and w/ an store). I am wondering if anyone has successfully started an home based internet business. I know that the income is based on many factors but I was wondering what others have made as far as profits and also how much did you invest?
Also what are your average monthly profits and expenses and what industry is your business? Thank You.

I’m not sure what your on-line business is? food, animals, breedings, specialty services?

pet Supplies plus and some of the other “big box” stores tried selling all of their stuff online, I remember buying 50 pound bags of dogfood from them with no shipping charges, I never figured out how they could make money doing it (they don’t sell that anymore).

That being said, if you’re selling a specialty breed of dog, you’d better have a darned good reputation or an unusual breed like sarplaniniac if you think someone’s going to plunk down hundreds / thousands on an unknown animal.

If you’re trying to sell specialty items like dog combs et al, know that you’ll need to buy in sufficient quantity to be priced comparable to the big retailers, and factor in shipping costs. A more likely scenario is something that the big guys don’t do – maybe you can have people send in pictures of their dogs and you re-create them on silkscreen and make ties or scarves, or something that differentiates you.

If you just want to be a me-too, set up a wholesale business and try to sell on ebay (although fees are eating many retailers alive there), that’s a possibility, see what the prices /shipping is before you place your order through the wholesalers.

I have a side business that I run on the internet – I raise exotic animals and sell them and their end products – I am moderately successful, but have 6 figures into the business, my ROI is decent but I still have my day job.

Expenses depend on whether animals are healthy or ill – most of the feed and other expenses have been fairly flat for the past 5 years. Income swings dramatically depending on how the industry is doing -
