Question by Carol Q: Do I need a business license for an online retail store?
I am in the process of setting up an online retail store in the state of California. Do I need a business license? I have a sellers permit and an ein. When completing supplier applications I am sometimes asked for a copy of my business license. Since it is not a physical store, I was wondering. They offer a lot of information for people starting businesses, but I guess they forget to be simple with their information. Thanks, I would appreciate a knowledgeable experienced person to answer please.

I’m not the expert here but generally a business licence is required when there is an opportunity for a local, state, or federal agency to collect sales tax. So if you sell products from your website in the state you live in, you need a licence to they can collect sales tax from you. I assume the same would apply for local taxes.
